Renewable sources of energy - wind power and solar power (thermal and photovoltaic) in particular, are essential alternatives to fossil fuels. Using them reduces our greenhouse gas emissions, diversifies our energy supply and reduces our dependence on unreliable and volatile fossil fuel markets (oil and gas).
We generally use energy for electricity and transport, however, the biggest use is for heating and cooling purposes. Renewable energy sources can be used to generate electricity, which we can then use to heat or cool our homes. Solar power can be used directly to heat water or our household heating systems, using solar panels and heat pumps.
For Cayman home owners and companies these technologies can be extremely significant due to the fact that electricity costs double the price of a kw/h in the US or Europe. This is not very likely to change in the near future.

The sun is the world's primary source of energy and solar power systems can harness the sun's rays as a high temperature, clean energy source. Photovoltaic energy is non-polluting, has no moving parts that break down, requires little maintenance and no supervision, and has a life of 20-30 years with low running costs. It is also unique because there is no need for a large-scale installation. Remote areas can easily produce their own supply of electricity by constructing the required sized system. Solar power generators are simply distributed to homes, schools or businesses, where their assembly requires no extra development or land area and their function is safe and quiet. As communities grow, more solar energy capacity can also be added. This will allow power generation to keep up with growing needs without having to overbuild generation capacity, which is the case with conventional large-scale power systems. Compare all these characteristics to the ones of coal, oil, gas or nuclear power and the choice is easy. Solar energy technologies provide a clean, renewable and domestic energy source.

Wind energy is also a promising renewable energy technology, where many developments and improvements have been made to make electricity generation more effective. Wind power is one, if not, the fastest growing energy source in the world, and has also become one of the most rapidly expanding industries. Offshore developments will be the next major step for this technology and will result in a dramatic increase in decentralized electricity generation.
Photovoltaic power has advantages over wind power as it's not noisy and it usually doesn't require any maintenance. Still, wind energy is an ideal addition to photovoltaic power as it can help to create energy at night. New developments, such as the Windspire, are now available, which reduce environmental impact and make wind power affordable for house owners.
